When her oldest daughter was getting married, Mary Franzell wanted her to have an extravagant wedding cake but couldn’t afford to buy one. So she bought a couple of how-to books on cake decorating, took an adult education class on the subject and made it herself.
“It was about 3 feet tall. Each layer was separated with champagne glasses turned upside down. It was incredible, just incredible,” according to the bride, Marilee Greene. Her wedding in February 1970 inspired a career as a champion cake decorator and shopkeeper for her mother.
